Having shot through the century like a comet, with Miles, Elvin Jones, Chick Corea and John McLaughlin, Dave Liebmann has decided to confront his audacious saxophone playing with two pillars of European improvisation: Wolfgang Reisinger (dms) and Jean-Paul Celea (b).
“Music here is really free, there are no constraints” he declared, speaking of World View, recorded for Label Bleu in 1997. We believe him.

Born in Brooklyn in 1946, he started playing the piano at the age of nine, before taking up the saxophone three years later on. He decided to go into jazz after hearing John Coltrane. He studied with Lennie Tristano and Charles Lloyd. He gave his first concert with Pete La Roca, Steve Swallow and Chick Corea, and started to perform in New York, where he met Richie Beirach in 1970. Having played with John McLaughlin (My Goal’s Beyond), he played with Ten Wheel Drive for two years, one of the first groups to play fusion. From 1970 he played with the Elvin Jones Group and then with Miles Davis from 1972 to 1974. He then went on tour with Chick Corea’s formation, before forming a quintet in 1978, bringing together Terumasa Hino, John Scofield, Ron McClure and Adam Nussbaum.
Then came the Quest quartet, with Richie Beirach, Eddie Gomez and Jack De Johnette. A way of paying tribute to the master, whose heritage is clearly visible in their approach and nourishes an exceptionally dense intention. Recognised, alongside Wayne Shorter and Steve Lacy, as one of the greatest stylists of the soprano, Dave Liebman is now pursuing his solo career but still taking part in a number of new projects. In 1994, he was the guest soloist for the Celea/Couturier Passaggio Quintet at the Hôtel d’Albert Festival. Following this concert he suggested a trio with Jean-Paul Celea and Wolfgang Riesinger
